Technical interviews test more than what you know. Here is a practical checklist to help you prepare, communicate clearly and show how you solve problems.
Technical interviews can feel unpredictable, but good preparation follows a pattern. Interviewers want to understand how you think, how you communicate and how your experience applies to their challenges, not only whether you remember a particular syntax.
1. Study the job description closely
Identify the three or four skills that appear most important and prepare a specific example for each: a project where you used the skill, what the challenge was, what you did and what the outcome was.
2. Review your own resume
Anything on your resume is fair game. Be ready to go deeper on each technology and project you list, including trade-offs you made and what you would do differently now.
3. Practice explaining your thinking out loud
In coding and design exercises, the process matters as much as the answer:
- Restate the problem and ask clarifying questions
- Talk through your approach before writing code
- Start simple, then improve
- Test your solution with a few examples, including edge cases
4. Prepare for system design questions
For mid-level and senior roles, expect questions about designing a service or system. Practice structuring your answer around requirements, high-level components, data storage, scaling and failure handling.
5. Get your setup ready for remote interviews
- Test your camera, microphone and internet connection in advance
- Close unnecessary applications and notifications
- Have a quiet space, water and a notepad nearby
- If you'll share your screen, know how to do it in the meeting tool being used
6. Prepare your questions
Thoughtful questions show genuine interest. Ask about the team's current challenges, how success is measured in the role, development practices and what the first 90 days would look like.
7. Follow up
Send a short thank-you note within a day, briefly reinforcing your interest and one point from the conversation.
